Peace Corps looking for a few good boomers

While poking around the Peace Corps web site, looking at some old news releases on the death of Julia Campbell, I saw this news release that mentions a push to get more baby boomers into the Peace Corps. An article about the trip, by veteran age beat writer Marsha King in the Seattle Times, says:

The goal is to boost the ranks of volunteers 50 and older from 5 percent of the 7,749 Americans in the Peace Corps to 15 percent over the next two years.

The article says the average age of the volunteers is 27, although there is a volunteer who is 81. Interesting, since when I heard about Julia in the Peace Corps, she sounded old for the program, even though she was only in her late 30s. I guess it’s because I know so little about the Peace Corps, and link it in my mind to recent college graduates (who, the article says, remain the core of the Corps.) It will be interesting to see how we boomers respond.
